Calling all history-loving adventurers! Get ready for a weekend full of exploring Mt. Freikofel, located in the Carnic Alps of Italy and Austria. This mountain was the scene of bloody skirmishes between Italian and Austro-Hungarian soldiers during WWI in the Italian trenches. The summit of Mt. Freikofel is the core of an open-air museum as you will find plenty of traces, remains, and ruins testifying the battles that were fought there, in addition to the Chapel of the Val Tagliamento Battalion and Austro-Italian memorial site. On one of the trails sit some machine gun pits surrounded by cement walls and the slits that faced enemy lines. Also visible is the historically significant “Shielded Italian Trench” (where Italian soldiers tracked movements of enemy troops across no-man’s land) which overlooks the whole valley below.
